Announcing the “Mal Smith Little Stars Learners Scholarships”

We’re proud to announce that 20 “Mal Smith Little Stars Learners Scholarships” will be made available to young people in foster care in Queensland next year, thanks to the generosity of the Kela Foundation.

Malcolm (Mal) Roy Smith was the owner and founder of the Pacific Helicopters Group, one of the largest helicopter charter services providers in the southern hemisphere. The Kela Foundation is Mal’s initiative to assist and support underprivileged communities in Australia.

Mal sadly passed away from COVID-19 complications earlier this year. He was a great believer that things could change and was deeply committed to helping underprivileged children and their communities get access to the same opportunities that were afforded to him as a child in Australia.

Mal was a “larger than life character” who touched the hearts and lives of many people and left behind an incredible legacy. That legacy will live on in 2022 through the “Mal Smith Little Stars Learners” Scholarships.

Thanks to the Kela Foundation, twenty children living in long term foster care in Queensland will benefit from 12-months’ worth of trauma-informed academic tutoring to help them catch up to their peers, engage with learning and create the hope of a much brighter future.

Our heartfelt thanks to this generous sponsor.
